Now the partition to which you wish to shrink the partition is highlighted. Click on the GParted button and shrink the partition by dragging the left and right sides of the partition to the right. A dialog box will appear, as you can see in the screen capture above. You can also see that the new free space is added to the end of the partition, rather than to the beginning.
To shrink a partition, you may need to move a hard disk to a different enclosure, or, at worst, perform a full hard disk replacement. This is a major operation and should not be performed without backups, as the original hard disk drive will likely be completely destroyed in the process. When shrinking a partition to obtain space for a backup partition, you can often save time by shrinking the partition on a separate hard disk.
This tutorial describes how to reduce the size of an existing partition. It assumes you have downloaded GParted from the official website and used it to create a bootable USB flash drive. If not, see Creating a live USB drive with GParted on Ubuntu 7.04 .
If you are using a custom version of GParted, you may need to download the tool from the official website. This is because GNU/Linux distributions do not provide a complete version of GParted for every architecture.
Start by clicking on the ‘Create partition’ icon, which is at the upper left of the GParted main window. Next, enter the drive number for your main hard disk. Then, select the partition you wish to create. You may only select one partition, at a time. If you only need to create a new swap partition, select a free space in the unallocated space.
