In the laboratory, live laboratory animals are used to explore the basic life processes of the central nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems and to demonstrate or validate the laws and principles of physiology. The major organs are studied in detail using live animals and include: lungs, heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, thyroid glands, testes, ovaries, uterus and muscles. In addition, the respiratory, cardiovascular and endocrine systems are studied with emphasis on the central nervous system. The animals used include: mice, rats, frogs, turtles, fish, birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, and larger species such as sheep, cattle, pigs, and guinea pigs. The use of other animals such as pigs, sheep, dogs, and cats will be introduced later in the course as the laboratory program requires. An introductory laboratory program is described for the following laboratory sections:
Laboratory Section I: On the 1st day of this laboratory course, students will receive a safety orientation of the laboratory environment and the handling and care of live animals. Students will learn how to make dead animal observations, use inhalation anesthetics, determine animal welfare status and temperatures, prepare and conduct research in high-quality laboratory, and use animal euthanasia methods. Students will conduct their research with live animals and will use at least one model of a model species of laboratory animal. The first laboratory session will take place in the first week of the fall semester. Laboratory Section II: On the 1st day of the first-year laboratory course, students will receive a safety orientation of the laboratory environment and the handling and care of live animals. Students will learn how to measure and record vital signs and determine animal welfare status and temperatures, prepare and conduct research in high-quality laboratory, use physiological techniques, and use animal euthanasia methods. Students will conduct their research with live animals and will use at least one model of a model species of laboratory animal. Laboratory Section III: The second laboratory session will take place in the second week of the fall semester. Laboratory Section IV: The third laboratory session will take place in the third week of the fall semester. Laboratory Section V: The fourth laboratory session will take place in the fourth week of the fall semester. 827ec27edc
