Study Design: A cross sectional study using convenient sampling technique was conducted from November 2010 to February 2011 at three schools in Delhi, India. The sample included 420 adolescent school girls in 3rd and 4th grades. In addition to the survey questionnaires, a focus group discussion was conducted to identify key findings and perspectives of the study findings. The results of the study showed that majority of the school girls knew about STIs. Out of the total 420 study subjects, none of the subjects had ever used any contraceptive or condom. Majority (61.8%) of the study subjects had not discussed sex education in school. Moreover, only 16.7% subjects think they can discuss sex and sexuality with their parents. Common barriers faced by adolescent school girls were fear of parents and teachers and lack of confidentiality. Incidences of sex and unsafe sex were prevalent among the school girls. The study also revealed that sex and sexuality education in school was not discussed in school. Hence, it was important to inculcate sex education in schools as well as to involve parents in the school curriculum.

Conclusions: Adolescent girls have little knowledge of STIs and sexuality-related issues. The study also found that adolescent school girls faced a number of barriers in talking about sex and sexuality with their parents. Hence, it is important to increase the literacy of parents and teachers and encourage these classes to discuss these issues with their students.
