The game comes with a lot of good illustrations. They are well designed, especially the ship profiles, which are as clear as they should be. Yet, the colour choices for space frames are not always coherent, and could not have been more silly. I don't know if that was deliberate, or a simple error. The map of the Gamma Quadrant does not leave much to the imagination, and is a nice edition to the book. The rules of course are clear and concise. They are well laid out and easy to follow, being well integrated with the rest of the book. I am looking forward to playing Trek Adventures. I hope that the game will be as fun as the TV series and the movies.
I also had some issues with the portrayal of Starfleet. When the Enterprise is sent out on the mission profile of 'Protect the Federation', Starfleet is so well equipped that they can send out an entire star base, with a fleet of frigates and maybe even some shuttles, a couple of hundred people and play it safe. Yet, when the ship is challenged by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey (or whatever that was), the crew is not equipped with shields. The Enterprise, as has been seen in the TV series, is equipped with weapons above all, and they feel they have to take risks. Hey, I am just a humble R&D engineer!
A Home In The Stars is for anybody who likes to play a roleplaying game in space. Its content is also suitable for a wide variety of game types. There are rules for running spacefaring games, there are rules for running fleet maneuvers, there are rules for running starship combat. There are rules for alien societies, there are rules for empires and empires in decline. There are rules for a singularity, for a singularity gone wrong, for planets, lifeforms, and habitable worlds. There are rules for the future, and the past, and there are rules for everything in between. This book does what I'd like to have seen most other game books do: It excels in the important areas: It is easily comprehensible. It presents a coherent and satisfying setting. It is never boring. It is full of lore, in a way that takes advantage of the expectations of most Star Trek fans.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
