The idea of philosophy as a perfecting of wisdom, or praxis, wasa development of the ideas of the schoolmen (see entry on Textualism).It was a way of applying the Aristotelian tradition to the problemsof politics. The idea was not that philosophy was a body of knowledgethat one could learn, but that there was something that the personwho was wise should do; that is, that there were problems for whichthere was a solution, and that this solution was to be found in the“good life”, the perfect life. This came to have importantconsequences for the tradition of philosophy.
The main result of this approach to philosophy was a whole bodyof texts, many of which were grouped together in collections, whichwere collected and edited by the masters, and used in teaching. Thesecollections had two main results, which are still important. First,they showed how much there was in the tradition, and secondly, they werethe means by which the tradition was transmitted.
The core idea of Paris philosophy was the perfection of wisdom, orperfect philosophia (“perfection of wisdom”), which could bedefinedas knowledge, or praxis; the arts of logic and rhetoric; and theart of being a sage. Proficiency in any of these was the proof ofbeing a wise person (see entry on philosophical skill). Some of theParis masters were influenced by Aristotle, by Isidore of Seville, bySt. Anselm, and by other early Christian thinkers. But, as the twelfthcentury progressed, the emphasis on the moral life was no longerimportant, and the project of perfecting wisdom largely gave way to that ofperfecting the virtues. The university was not devoted to teachingits students wisdom, but to perfecting their souls, particularlytheir character, their prudence, and their justice. The main aim wasto improve the world, not to improve philosophers. Although ethics andmorality were obviously important for the tradition of Paris, andcertainly the twelfth century, the philosophical approach to ethics wasotherwise quite different from that of the tradition in antiquity, forexample, in Sextus Empiricus and the Stoics, or in the Aristotelian tradition,and it was much less a part of the curriculum.
